BRUCE A. GLASRUD and CARY D. WINTZ. The Harlem Renaissance in the American West. Routledge. 260 pages; paperback, $35, Amazon.com.

The African American cultural and political reawakening of the 1920s and 1930s, referred to as the Harlem Renaissance, also existed in the American West. Many of the prominent participants in the Harlem Renaissance grew up in the West. Yet, the long distances, the expense, and breaking of family ties (especially for black women) prevented many black westerners from relocating to New York. Instead, they created and participated in local renaissances in their own home communities.
