JEROME A. GREENE. American Carnage: Wounded Knee, 1890. University of Oklahoma Press. Hardcover, 620 pages, $34.95, oupress.com.

Research is both a solitary and often a lengthy journey.  Jerome A. Greene made a career doing what some embrace with great reluctance. To make the assignment even more challenging, he chose a topic that has attracted and fascinated scholars and the public for more than a century. Greene states that his interest in Wounded Knee dates to 1969. In the years that followed, he has gained recognition as an expert in Indian Wars. What inspired Greene to write about Wounded Knee were his early interest, the wealth of primary sources and previously unknown testimonies recently made available. Greene has used those resources well and produced a history that will stand as a scholarly landmark. The book is a Spur Winner as Best Historical Nonfiction in 2015.
