LOUIS KRAFT. Ned Wynkoop and the Lonely Road from Sand Creek. Hardcover, www.oupress.com
Without orders Wynkoop attempted to end a Cheyenne war in fall 1864. It looked as if he had succeeded but then Colorado Volunteers massacred these same Indians at Sand Creek. Wynkoop spoke out vehemently against the attack, became a hated white man, and then worked for the Cheyennes. Again and again he stood against white actions as he fought to get the Cheyennes a fair deal. Even though his efforts eventually failed, George Bent, a mixed-blood Cheyenne, called him the best friend the Cheyennes ever had.
