Leaving Yuma is one of Michael Zimmer’s “American Legends Collection,” fictional reminiscences based on an equally fictitious Works Progress Administration project. In 1937, J.T. Latham recalls his 1907 trek into Mexico to rescue a kidnapped woman and her two children from bandit chief and would-be revolutionary Chito Soto. In return, he is promised a full pardon for his smuggling conviction.

Once the action does start, it comes fast, and with enough gunplay to satisfy even the most demanding reader. Double-crosses follow quickly, so along with Latham the reader never knows who can be trusted.
