John Wallace Crawford left Pennsylvania for the Black Hills in the mid-1870s and reinvented himself as “Captain Jack,” “Poet Scout of the Black Hills” and newspaper correspondent for the Omaha Daily Bee.

Paul Hedren has compiled the series of letters Crawford penned in 1875 and ’76, largely forgotten today. Hedren also chronicles Crawford’s life and times, and introduces each series of letters with enlightening essays. Ho! For the Black Hills is a must for Custer buffs, novelists and historians.
