LarsonBlumenscheinROBERT W. LARSON and CAROLE B. LARSON. Ernest L. Blumenschein: The Life of an American Artist. University of Oklahoma, Hardcover, 349 pages, $29.95,   www.oupress.com.

Ernest Blumenschein (1874-1960) was a founding member of the Taos Society of Artists and a noted painter of New Mexico’s Pueblo Indians and the state’s landscape. During his career, he won many art prizes and received numerous awards. The authors of this major biography provide an intimate look at Blumenschein’s life and commitment to his art.

Born in Pittsburgh and raised in Dayton, Ohio, Blumenschein showed artistic talent at an early age. He studied in Paris art schools and, while aspiring to be a fine arts painter, won recognition – and a sizable income — as an illustrator for books and magazine stories. This biography includes 16 color plates of his Western paintings and an equal number of black-and-white illustrations.
