SHERRY ROBINSON. I Fought a Good Fight: A History of Lipan Apaches

I_Fought_Good_FightSHERRY ROBINSON. I Fought a Good Fight: A History of Lipan Apaches. University of North Texas Press. Hardcover, 495 pages, $32.95, www.untpress.unt.edu.

Sherry Robinson offers the definitive history of the Lipan Apaches from the days of Spanish Conquest through the present. Lipans ranged over Texas in the Pecos and Rio Grande regions, and in Mexico, along the Concho and Sabinas Rivers. Robinson carefully portrays the differences between Lipans and other Apaches: for instance, Lipans ate fish, while Mescaleros did not. She brings to life the great chiefs, such as Costilitos and Magoosh. Robinson authenticates carefully, but strikes a nice balance between austere scholarship and readability.
