BUD SHAPARD. Chief Loco: Apache Peacemaker. University of Oklahoma Press. 364 pages; hardcover, $34.95, OUPress.com.

Bud Shapard’s biography of Chief Loco, a chief of the Warm Springs Chiricahua Apaches, received the 2011 New Mexico Book Award for a Multi-Cultural Subject. A lifelong antagonist of the intractable Geronimo, Loco consistently pursued a peaceful coexistence with the United States despite governmental treachery and resistance from warlike chiefs. In 1886, continuous raiding by militants following Geronimo, led to the imprisonment of the entire Chiricahua tribe for 27 years in Florida, Alabama and Oklahoma.
